While it is critical to remain objective and open-minded and not to judge a person based on their past actions, it is difficult not to ask yourself how can such a confession not lead to a conviction, and what does this say about the reliability of courtroom evidence?

Sergeant David Ayers, the lead detective on the case, pays a visit to Mrs. Rochelle Hillemeyer, Donnie Bull's girlfriend. Rochelle discloses that Donnie and his friend David Nell were at her house playing cards the evening before the fire. Donnie left her place sometime after midnight, claiming he had a flat tire near Bork's Scrapyard upon his return from dropping Nell off at home. While some aspects of Donnie's story raise suspicion, Rochelle's account paints a picture of an ordinary evening with no signs of unusual behavior.  But an interview with Jacqueline Day, Rochelle's mother, offers an entirely different account of Donnie's return on the morning of the fire. Donnie allegedly mentioned seeing smoke near Bork's Scrapyard and hearing sirens, which leaves investigators puzzled due to the conflicting information on the timing and location of the flat tire incident.
